Welcome to David Alan Carpenter's art studio.  Exploring innovative approaches to the ancient wax medium of encaustic, David’s work is characterized by bold, translucent color and deep texture.

After studying sculpture with Clayton Bailey at Cal State East Bay, David eventually expanded his practice to include drawing, silk painting, textile design, sumi-e, watercolor, acrylic and other media. Eventually David found his passion working with encaustic, as this art form allowed him to create two dimensional works with the sculptural and textural effects he loved. He developed a unique approach in order to “paint” with gauzy, nearly transparent, layers of colored paper ironed into place with clear organic beeswax. (More insight into his technique can be found on the FAQ tab above). His elaborate layering method highlights the blending of colors and the relationships between them. CMYK tri-hue color theory as developed by his mentor Richard Nelson informs most of his work. For years Dick patiently and persistently forced David to ask the right questions and deepen his understanding of relative color and light.

David’s work has been exhibited at the Encaustic Art Museum and the Satin/Reichman Memorial Art Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is in several private collections throughout the United States. Most of his encaustic artwork can be seen here or on the Gallery tab.
